How to Complete Your Profile and Why Your Matric Number Matters

Your ChamberOS profile is more than a name and a photo. It decides which class timetable you see, whether you can vote, and how your coursemates find you. Here is what each part does, what you can change later, and why your matric number matters so much.

Where to edit your profile

Open the Profile tab and tap Edit Profile. On the web, the same fields are in your profile settings. Whatever you change saves to your account and shows up on your phone and the web.

What each field does

Name, username, and handle

• Your full name is what admins and chamber leaders see on official lists.
• Your username is your display name around the app, in chat and on leaderboards.
• Your handle is your short tag, lowercase and no spaces, used for mentions.

You can change these any time.

Faculty

Your faculty puts you with the right chambers and notices. You can change it, but switching faculty takes you out of chambers that belong to your old faculty, so the app asks you to confirm first.

Year of study

Your year decides which class timetable and notices you see. Here is the key part: you set your year once, and after that it is locked. You cannot change it yourself.

That is on purpose. A class moves up together, not one student at a time. When the year rolls over, your class rep or a faculty admin moves the whole class up in one go. So if your year is wrong, do not go hunting for a setting. Open Edit Profile and tap Notify Class Rep. That starts a chat with your rep, who can move the class, and a faculty admin can fix a genuine mistake.

Date of birth

ChamberOS has a minimum age, and your date of birth confirms you meet it. You set it when you first join.

Your matric number: the key to voting

If you plan to vote in chamber elections, your matric number is the most important thing on your profile.

Why it matters

Voting needs to know you are really you, so that each student votes once. Your matric number is how ChamberOS checks that. Without it, you will see elections but you will not be able to cast a vote.

How it is kept safe

• It is tidied up for you. Spacing and capital letters are cleaned, so law/24/001 and LAW/24/001 count as the same.
• It is one per student in your university. Two people cannot use the same matric number. If you try one that is taken, the app tells you, and asks you to contact your faculty admin if it is really yours.
• Some universities check the format. If yours has set a pattern, the app checks your entry and shows a hint if it looks wrong.
• It locks once set. Like your year, only a faculty admin can change it after you save. That keeps the voter list honest.

How to add yours

1. Open Edit Profile.
2. Type your matric number exactly as your school gives it.
3. Save. It locks from here, so check it before you save.
